Bargany is a familiar name in the medieval history of South West Scotland. The Kennedy's of Bargany lived here in the Old Castle from around 1455 until 1631 when Thomas Kennedy sold the estate to John Hamilton . Hamilton's son built Bargany House in 1681 on the land above the old Bargany Castle using some of the stones from the castle walls. Alterations and editions to the house were carried out in the 19th century by the Darlymple-Hamilton family. It is a Grade A Listed Building and retains much of the original impressive pre-Adam plasterwork and carvings. The house fell into disrepair in the 1980s and has since been completely refurbished.
The house originated as an unfortified mansion in the late 17th century and comprised a four storey building with crow stepped end gables.
Bargany has since developed into a large but easily manageable family house. The magnificent receptions are spacious and elegant. The standard of plasterwork and panelling is of the highest quality and the decoration throughout is outstanding. Uniquely, this is a sizeable and historic house but has been refurbished to an exceptional standard. Large windows throughout the house ensure that it feels light and airy.
For a house of this age there is a large and impressive modern kitchen divided into cooking area and a light living room with views down the drive and over the park. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen.
Over the ground floor, there is a study, cinema, games room, billiard room and gymnasium. The extensive cellarage is situated below. There are also various domestic rooms.
The master bedroom suite is very generous and 7 of the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms.
There is an excellent 3 bedroom staff flat in the south wing with separate entrance but also integral access.
Externally, there is plenty of storage with the outbuildings and three car garage.
The 7 acres consist of formal gardens, lawns, woodland and a tennis court.
The valley of the Girvan Water is one of the most beautiful in South West Scotland. The house is situated at the heart of the Bargany Estate to which it used to belong. It is surrounded by 1200 acres of pasture, woodland and gardens. The views are spectacular and unrivalled over the Bargany Estate parkland and the Girvan Water below. This remarkable, unspoilt and protected view is why generations of owners have continued to invest in, love and enjoy the house.
The house is accessed down a ¾ mile drive from the road through impressive gate piers, passing beautiful woodland, rhododendrons and an ornamental lake.
Bargany is located down a long picturesque drive, within an ancient private and rural estate. It occupies an elevated position with glorious views over fine, mature parkland and overlooking the meandering Girvan Water and a listed Grade B 18th century Duke's Bridge.
Whilst the house benefits from the amenity of being set within a private estate it has a readily manageable and flexible 7 acres of gardens and grounds.
The surrounding countryside offers a wealth of sporting activities including, Salmon and Trout fishing on the Girvan Water, shooting, riding and walking. Ayrshire is also famous for its Links Golf Courses with Turnberry, Royal Troon and Prestwick all nearby. There are also countless other golf courses in the region.
The luxury Turnberry resort within 7 miles of Bargany offers award winning accommodation, restaurants, spa / leisure facilities and The Ailsa Golf Course rated amongst the world's best.
The Ayrshire Coastline is spectacular with the island of Ailsa Craig being a famous landmark. There are yachting marinas at Girvan, Troon and Inverkip. Girvan is the nearest small town and provides amenities for everyday requirements. Ayr offers a more extensive range of amenities.
Prestwick International Airport is 5 miles north of Ayr. If offers an excellent service to London Stanstead as well as International airports. The railway service from Ayr provides services to Glasgow and the south. The M77 gives access to Glasgow city centre as well as Glasgow airport.
