Described as a Grade II* listed, "15th Century masterpiece", The Old Vicarage is a stunning timber framed house which combines village living with country views. Embracing both Georgian and Victorian architecture, the house offers light and attractive family accommodation with the benefit of a mature private garden.
With history thought to date back to circa 875, The Old Vicarage has evolved over the centuries and is noted in both Pevsner and the Vernacular Buildings of Shropshire. In 1215 King John gave "permission for 18 oaks to be cut from the Forest of Morfe for the repair of the Prebendral House", at that time the building was likely to have been a Guild Hall or refectory house. It is thought to have been converted to a dwelling house in Jacobean times with later Georgian influences and extended in the Victorian era.
Believed to have belonged to The Royal Peculiar of Bridgnorth at one time, The Old Vicarage was sold away from the church in 1969 and has only changed hands three times since that time. The present owners bought the house in 1989 when it underwent a programme of restoration and modernisation to create a much loved and cherished family home and during the 1990s combined as a Christian retreat.
The house accommodation is light with an easy flow of rooms ideal for everyday living and entertaining. A double arched oak front door opens to a hall off which is the striking double aspect drawing room with high chamfered beamed ceiling, Georgian shuttered windows and inglenook fireplace. The sitting room opposite enjoys a village outlook to the front and rural views through the large bay window to the rear, and an Adam-style open fireplace. Stone steps lead from the hall down to the peaceful "quiet" room, once used for prayer and contemplation, but could now be used as an adaptable space for a play room or study. To the rear of the house the kitchen enjoys views to the church whilst both the kitchen and the dining room open onto the terrace under the wisteria-clad wall.
Upstairs the main landing leads to the master bedroom with en suite bathroom and dressing room and three further double bedrooms with wide oak floor boards, exposed studwork and beams. A corridor runs through to the Victorian wing where there is a further bedroom and bathroom which can be served by the back stairs enabling it to become self-contained if required.
The house has vehicular access over the Church driveway which leads round to the back of The Old Vicarage to a solid double gate opening to a parking area and the large double garage and Workshop.
To the rear of the wisteria and rose clad house is a sheltered paved terrace with private easily maintained part walled garden. Sloping lawns lead into the beautiful country views beyond and are bounded by stocked borders and mature trees including apple and pear.
The Old Vicarage stands at the hub of the thriving, historic and picturesque village of Claverley. Next to the handsome eleventh Century Norman Church of All Saints, it enjoys views up the pretty High Street and to the rear across unspoilt Shropshire countryside.
The village has an active local community made up of a number of societies and events based around the church, village hall and three pubs. The well supported Primary School is highly regarded with excellent Ofsted reports. The surrounding countryside offers attractive country walks and there are a number of golf courses nearby including Chesterton Valley at Worfield.
Claverley is situated to the east of the market town of Bridgnorth, a busy market town with a range of individual shops, schools, general amenties and noted for its 16th and 17th century architecture, perpendicular cliff railway, and its specialities of antiques and local produce. There are excellent schools in the area, both in the state and independent sectors including Birchfield Preparatory, Tettenhall College, Wrekin College, Shrewsbury High and Shrewsbury School.
The village is also well placed for commuting to Birmingham, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and a number of Midland business centres along with easy access to the regions motorways (M54, M6 and M5). Wolverhampton Station offers a direct service to London and Birmingham International Airport is 43 miles.
From Bridgnorth take the A454 towards Wolverhampton. Continue for approximately 4.5 miles until you reach a roundabout, take the third exit onto the B4176 (signposted Dudley). In 0.5 miles turn right towards Claverley and then in just over a mile bear left onto Church Street. Continue until the road is joined by Pound Street and the Old Vicarage and Claverley Church will be found on the right hand side.
