 Charming trio of Palladian windows above the front door,
crafted stone walls and a lovely first floor landing.
 Nikolaus Pevsner thought the house merited more than a
mention not only for the windows but also for the stone corners
showing quoining still in use in the 18th century.
 Additions faced in reconstituted stone in the early 1980's made
for more practical management of the house.

Situation

Bainly House nestles in beautiful countryside on the outskirts of
the village of Cucklington. The property lies on the Somerset
Dorset border. It has a beautiful garden and superb views over
the Blackmore Vale.
The nearby towns of Wincanton (about 4 miles) and Gillingham
(2.5 miles) provide a range of local shopping and everyday
facilities. The attractive Abbey and market town of Sherborne is
less than 14 miles away. A further range of leisure, cultural and
other amenities is available in the Cathedral Cities of Salisbury
and Wells as well as in the Abbey city of Bath. Bath and
Salisbury possess excellent theatres. Longleat with its famous
Safari Park is less than an hours drive away. Stourhead Gardens
are only some twenty minutes' drive. Gillingham provides a
mainline rail service to London Waterloo, taking about two hours.
Alternatively, Castle Cary offers services to London Paddington, a
journey of some 1 hour 45 minutes. The A303 is about 3 miles
away, giving excellent links to the M3, M25 and London and the
M5 to the West. The area is well-known for its superb private
schools, including Port Regis, Sandroyd, Hazelgrove, Hanford
and Sherborne prep schools. Public schools include Bryanston,
Milton Abbey, Sherborne, Downside and Millfield. Sporting and
recreational facilities include golf at Sherborne, Wincanton and
Tollard Royal. Racing at Wincanton, Taunton, Bath and Salisbury.
Hunting with the Blackmore & Sparkford Vale or South & West
Wilts. Watersports along the south coast. Excellent walking and
riding locally, in unspoilt countryside.

Directions

From Salisbury take the A303 west, exiting left at the brow of a
hill signed Shaftesbury B308l. Proceed for 2.2 miles and turn
sharp right for Cucklington. Bainly House appears after half a
mile, on the left, in a dip. Alternatively from Salisbury follow the
A36 to Wilton, then the A30 to Shaftesbury, from Shaftesbury
B3081 via Gillingham towards Wincanton. Two miles after
Gillingham turn left, following sign for Cucklington. Bainly House
is half a mile along on the left in a dip.
